Call for Application: LSA 2026, Teaching Critical AI Literacy

The Lagos Studies Association Teaching Committee is happy to announce our second-annual preconference pedagogy workshop on Teaching Critical AI Literacy at LSA 2026.

We invite applications for this five-day workshop beginning on Thursday, June 11. That evening, we will gather for a small dinner and meet-and-greet. The next three days will be focused on guided discussion and rigorous review of selected literature on technology, society, ecology, culture, and political economy. The final day of the workshop will focus on developing your own workshop for students and colleagues, along with networking around ideas for possible collaborative publications.

Keep in mind this will not be a workshop on prompt engineering or how to use so-called AI technologies and large language models like Chat-GTP and Gemini. In this workshop, we will approach these technologies with a critical lens, paying attention to a range of concerns, including environmental, labor, privacy, and intellectual property. Once we have a firm critical foundation in place, we will move on to contrasting Afrocentric  approaches to AI usage and ethics with those from the Global North.

You will be provided with a printed course reader in advance of the workshop so that you are prepared to participate at the highest level. During our workshop sessions we will strive to stay device free.

Selected candidates will receive:

1) Conference registration fee waiver/reimbursement

2) Ten nights of hotel accommodation

2) Breakfast, lunch, and dinner for nine days

3) Transportation allowance
